Water shortage leads to closure of Leeds and Liverpool Canal

A Boat hire firm based in Burnley is heading out of town following British Waterways’ decision to close 60 mile stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

British Waterways says drought conditions leave it with no option but to close the canal to through traffic for half the length of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, a 60-mile stretch – from the locks at Wigan to Gargrave – and the first time it has happened in 15 years.
